<image:caption>The inaugural event, a joint Race in Conversation titled "Racism and the Historical Roots of Nursing," set the stage for a groundbreaking dialogue among participants in the medical field. This event provided a unique space for healthcare professionals to engage in conversations about racism in ways they may not have had the opportunity to before. Participants shared that the open dialogue on racism and healthcare topics, interactions with community members, and the historical insights presented were incredibly valuable aspects of the discussion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Why does diversity matter in the Judiciary? The absence of a diverse judicial system in the U.S. has and will affect public belief in the court system, case sentencing, and confidence in a fair trial. A diverse judiciary helps create trust and legitimacy in the justice system among underrepresented groups. Trust of the court system is particularly low among Black Americans, when Black men are nearly 6 times more likely to be incarcerated than White men.</image:caption>

On June 22nd, more than 7,000 people attended a UDL meeting in Baton Rouge’s municipal stadium to support continuing the boycott. <image:caption>The legacy of a Riot in Baton Rouge fifty years ago is a story that is still told in a variety of versions of an event that left 4 people dead. The riot happened at a time when an all-white group, Baton Rouge Leaders, claimed race relations were good in the city. Dialogue on Race Louisiana would like to offer an account by an eyewitness. He is Bobby Thompson, a facilitator for the DOR Original Series, and the longest serving facilitator for the 10-year-old Dialogue on Race Louisiana organization. He is the most requested facilitator by participants in the series and by other facilitators who want him as a team member when leading a DOR Series. Bobby Thompson has a stellar reputation for being reliable and credible with high principles and integrity. Read his account of the riot below.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - What is Cancer Alley? Environmental Racism In Our Backyards</image:title>
<image:caption>Right here in Louisiana, in the stretch of land between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, sits “Cancer Alley.” The area gets its name from the alarming cluster of cancer cases in the Black communities that live nearby. Reports and studies have traced these cases back to the equally alarming cluster of nearly 150 oil refineries, plastics plants and chemical facilities inhabiting this same land. In 2002, Louisiana had the second-highest death rate from cancer in the United States. While the national average is 206 deaths per 100,000, Louisiana’s rate was 237.3 deaths per 100,000. If you dig deeper, the numbers point to a more troubling issue. According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, the cancer risks in predominantly African-American neighborhoods are almost double that of white neighborhoods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These two topics take a similar, critical approach to viewing the American experience, and the way that history, institutions, and popular movements have shaped different paths of life in this country. That is certainly not a coincidence, as both topics were influenced heavily by the same woman, Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw. In examining Professor Crenshaw’s work, we can see how Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality inform our understanding of the American society we see today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - The Relationship Between Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory - Image Source – Illustration by Terry Laban</image:title>
<image:caption>Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory have received much opposition and criticism over the past few years, often from conservative and republican leaders. Critics often leverage that these two concepts spread hate and racism against white people. What this reveals is best described as a fear of an alternative view of American society, history, and power hierarchy. Critiques from former President Trump and Florida Governor DeSantis reflect the flawed belief that as systems of oppression are acknowledged and recognized, white people will be the ones oppressed. For Professor Crenshaw, these arguments support the foundational truth – “that individuals have individual identities that intersect in ways that impact how they are viewed, understood, and treated.” Additionally, these systems of power are not meant to be inverted with people of color on top, but rather the power structures that maintain inequality should be dismantled (Vox, Coaston).</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 1970, something strange was occurring at Pittsburgh Presbyterian University Hospital. At any time of the day, young men in strange uniforms would burst through the doors to attempt to save patients in dire conditions. This may not be so strange to hear today, but at that time these were the world’s first paramedics, and they were Black.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - Before there were Ambulances …</image:title>
<image:caption>Could you imagine a time without ambulances, paramedics, or even 24 hour emergency rooms? Before the late 1960s, there were no designated first responders; often it fell to firefighters, police officers, or even local funeral homes to transport patients. In Pittsburgh, much like the rest of the country, you had what was called ‘swoop and scoop,’ where the police were called to pick you up and throw you in the back of their paddy wagon. In the predominantly Black Hill District of Pittsburgh, the care that police provided was often worse. Most residents were hesitant to get in the same police van that they were threatened with the day before.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - The Minds Behind the Idea …</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea started with Phil Hallen, who worked passionately on health disparities in Black communities and wanted to develop a program that delivered emergency medical care. He teamed up with Jim McCoy, leader of Freedom House Enterprises, which rolled out job training, a grocery delivery system, and voting drives in the Hill District. Hallen also sought out Dr. Peter Safar, the father of CPR, who had already begun working on mobile medical transport and what would become the modern-day ICU.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - The First Class …</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Safar created a 300-hour intensive training course for this new branch of medicine. In 1967, the first graduates of this course were exclusively young Black men from the Hill District of Pittsburgh. The world’s first paramedics had to learn how to do practically everything an ICU does, and then translate that to both on-site medical treatment and treatment provided inside a cramped moving vehicle.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - Challenges and Successes …</image:title>
<image:caption>Once the paramedics were trained and ready, they faced a number of challenges out on the street. Police were less willing to call them to the scene as they felt their jobs were being taken away. Patients and doctors alike would either refuse to accept help from a Black person or simply refuse to believe they knew how to give medical care. Despite the setbacks, within the first few years, Freedom House and their five ambulances were receiving 6,000 calls annually and saving countless lives in the process. They were receiving attention from all over the nation, with doctors as far away as Germany seeing the potential for this breakthrough in healthcare.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - Freedom House is Shut Out …</image:title>
<image:caption>In spite of this success, Freedom House began to see a decline with the election of Pittsburgh’s new democratic mayor, Pete Flaherty. He almost immediately cut Freedom House funding in half and instituted many policies to restrict and oust Freedom House paramedics. In 1975, the federal government asked then Freedom House director Nancy Caroline to come up with a standardized EMS training textbook. However, during that same year, Mayor Flaherty seized all funding for Freedom House and used it to introduce a new ambulance service with a staff that was 98% white by the 1990s.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | DORLA - For the Record: Freedom House Ambulance Service - The Legacy of Freedom House …</image:title>
<image:caption>After the introduction of Pittsburgh’s new ‘official’ EMS service, Freedom House was quickly forgotten, and credit for their new pioneering work was never given. The textbook that Nancy Caroline wrote became the standard for EMS training and remains so today, decades later. Ambulances and paramedics are now seen as the norm, but it was truly the trailblazing work of the Black men and women of the Freedom House Ambulance Service that brought it to life.</image:caption>

In lieu of one major metamorphosis, the cicada’s 17-year life is marked by multiple moltings (or sheddings of old layers). <image:title>Blog | DORLA - The Women Who Championed Equal Rights: 1830s – 1900s - In 1878, a group of 12 jurors awarded victory to Henrietta Wood, who sued for reparations over slavery over 8 years beforehand. She would be awarded $2,500 (a sum of around $65,000 today), which still stands today as the largest amount awarded by the U.S. in restitution for slavery.</image:title>
<image:caption>Henrietta Wood was born into slavery sometime between 1818 and 1820, but was taken from her family in 1834 and sold to the Cirode family in New Orleans. She then moved north with the wife of the family and in 1848, she was registered as free in Ohio and began to find work on her own around Cincinnati.</image:caption>
